PEKIN, Ill. – Pekin Mayor Mary Burress is seeking another term in office, announcing her reelection campaign Friday while highlighting infrastructure improvements, economic development and financial accountability.
Burress said she wants to continue building on the city’s progress while addressing ongoing challenges.
“Serving as Mayor of this community has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Burress said in a statement. “I believe in Pekin. I believe in our people, our potential, and the future we can build together.”
In her announcement, Burress highlighted a $71 million capital improvement plan and a $2.88 million grant for Broadway improvements.
She also pointed to new business developments, including retailers at East Court Village, a new Chipotle and additional businesses near Menards. Other developments cited by Burress include EPIC Medical, Ambient Fuels and an expansion by Excalibur Seasonings.
Burress also noted that Pekin’s Court Street improvement and revitalization project received a 2026 Project of the Year award from the American Public Works Association.
Financial accountability remains another focus of her administration.
According to Burress, the city expects to complete six overdue external audits by January, with a seventh to follow.
“Taxpayers deserve to know their money is being managed responsibly,” Burress said. “We have made progress, but we must finish the job.”
Looking ahead, Burress said her priorities include continued infrastructure investment, encouraging housing development, attracting new businesses and supporting existing employers.
She also emphasized responsible growth, regional planning and cooperation throughout the community.
“I am not finished working for Pekin,” Burress said. “Here in Pekin, we are not waiting for the future. We are building it!”
