PEORIA, Ill. (25News Now) – Peoria Public Works hosted a public design meeting Wednesday night on the Pioneer Parkway multi-use path extension project.
City leaders say the project will connect the Allen Road path to the Rock Island Greenway through Pioneer Parkway.
The project is in early planning through the end of this year, with design set for 2027 and construction starting in the spring of 2028.
The $3.9 million project is funded with state, motor fuel tax and federal grant dollars. The city will own and maintain the path.
“It’s more just for connectivity to give people the ability to go from place to place using their bicycles. Right now it’s not safe to be on Pioneer Parkway on your bike because it is a heavily traveled roadway. So this will allow people to go to the businesses that are along this corridor,” said Andrea Klopfenstein, engineering division deputy director for Peoria Public Works.
Officials say signalized, marked crosswalks will control the crossing at Pioneer Parkway.
