PEORIA, Ill. – Two employees were taken to a hospital after fumes from roofing work circulated through a Peoria office building Monday afternoon.
The Peoria Fire Department was called to 5111 N. Glen Park Place around 1:36 p.m. for a reported hazardous materials incident.
The building had been evacuated before firefighters arrived, and several employees reported flu-like symptoms. Two employees were taken to a hospital before fire crews arrived, while the remaining employees were evaluated at the scene and released.
No serious illnesses or injuries were reported.
Fire officials determined a contractor performing roofing work had been using an adhesive product. Fumes from the adhesive were drawn into the building’s HVAC system and circulated throughout the facility.
Hazardous materials crews identified the chemicals involved and ventilated the building. Firefighters remained at the scene for more than an hour.
About 25 people were displaced during the incident. The fire department says the office is expected to reopen Tuesday morning.
