PEORIA, Ill. – If you’re driving around Peoria, you know the drill—orange barrels and traffic delays are just part of your routine right now. But there’s a big price tag behind all that work you’re seeing on the roads.
State officials are pouring over 300 million dollars into 11 major road and bridge projects across the area.
That is a lot of money, and you’ll feel the impact on some of the area’s most critical routes. There is major construction on the McClugage Bridge, the Cedar Street Bridge, and significant repaving work on Route 6.
Some of these projects wrap up this year, but others will keep the work going through 2027 and even 2028.
It’s a headache, sure. But the state says the goal is safer travel and more reliable trips to work or school. For now, pay extra attention to work zones, slow down, and expect to add a few extra minutes to your drive.
The Illinois Department of Transportation’s accomplishments through March 31 of Rebuild Illinois include approximately $24 billion of improvements statewide on 23,081 miles of highways, 920 bridges and 1,393 additional safety improvements.
