PEORIA, Ill. – Two-way traffic begins on Jefferson Avenue on Tuesday morning in downtown Peoria.
Construction barrels will be removed at 10 a.m., and Peoria Police will be there to help ensure things go smoothly.
“We’re going to pull the barrels off on Jefferson from Fayette to Walnut, and we’ll officially be two-way. It’ll be after the morning rush hour, with people getting to work and where they need to go,” Peoria Public Works’ Nick McMillion says.
With the change, McMillion tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan Show” that all downtown parking decks will have right-turn only exits.
“That is to help with the free flow of traffic…to keep lines from backing up with drivers trying to make that left turn,” McMillion says.
Adams Street was converted to two-way traffic late last month, with drivers adjusting to the change very quickly.
McMillion says the Adams/Jefferson conversion project was slated to last two-and-a-half years, but it wrapped up about six months early. Construction began in the spring of 2024.
