PEORIA, Ill.—Area drivers are seeing another significant jump at the pump this week, as the average price for a gallon of unleaded gas in Peoria has risen 8.0 cents in the last seven days, with an average price of $4.94 on Monday.
GasBuddy says Peoria’s prices are up 69.5 cents from a month ago and $1.63 higher than a year ago.
AAA Illinois also reports an average of $4.94 a gallon for the Peoria/Pekin metro area, while the state average price was $4.97.
GasBuddy reports show a wide price spread in the area, with the cheapest gas priced $4.73 a gallon on Sunday, and the most expensive hitting $5.19 a gallon. Across the state, prices varied by $2.16 a gallon, ranging from a low of $4.19 to a high of $6.35.
Nationally, the average price of gas climbed 5.1 cents in the last week to $4.48 per gallon. According to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, this follows an initial drop in some Great Lakes states due to easing oil prices and a temporary tax waiver in Indiana. However, that relief was short-lived after U.S.-Iran talks stalled and President Trump rejected the latest proposal.
De Haan warns that price increases are likely to return soon. “Many states could see another round of price cycling in the days ahead, potentially sending the national average toward the $4.65-per-gallon mark if oil continues climbing,” De Haan said. “In addition, diesel prices across much of the Great Lakes region are nearing new record highs as ongoing refinery issues continue to disproportionately impact diesel production.”
