PEORIA, Ill. – Allegiant Airlines began service at Peoria’s General Wayne A. Downing International Airport in March 2004, with five flights a week to Las Vegas, Nevada.
20 years later, PIA is celebrating its long-standing relationship with the airline, with Peoria being one of the first cities Allegiant chose to develop as a core city.
“The confidence they have in our market is inspiring and we can’t wait to see what the next 20 years brings.”, said Gene Olson, Director of Airports for the Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria. “Looking back 20 years, the PIA Board and management from 2004 are to be congratulated for their foresight and vision to recruit and assist Allegiant in getting started, seeing today how their decisions have benefited the community,” Olson said.
Since 2004, Allegiant has grown to 20 flights a week to 10 destinations through PIA.
Allegiant originally made up 13-percent Peoria’s airline passenger market share and now are at about 49-percent, according to Olson.
In the past 20 years, there have been more than 3.3 million Allegiant passengers that have traveled through the gates at Peoria International Airport.
