PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. – A Peoria man is now charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of a 20-year-old woman and their 2-year-old son.
Peoria County State’s Attorney Jodi Hoos announced Tuesday that a grand jury indicted 24-year-old Jeremiah Duncan on an additional first-degree murder charge in the death of KJ Duncan-Wood.
Duncan was previously charged with first-degree murder in the death of the child’s mother, Heaven Wood.
The deaths occurred September 25 in the 3500 block of Yorkshire Drive.
The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office was initially called to a vehicle fire around 6:09 a.m. After the fire was extinguished, first responders found KJ inside the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies then connected the vehicle to a nearby home, where they found Wood with a gunshot wound. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The indictment alleges Duncan shot Wood and started the fire that caused KJ’s death.
Duncan was arrested later that day. The State’s Attorney’s Office says he remains hospitalized while in custody.
The investigation remains ongoing.
