PEORIA, Ill. — If you or someone in your family is dealing with cancer, there is some big news out of OSF HealthCare, bringing new hope directly to Central Illinois.
The OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute in Peoria is officially joining the Hoosier Cancer Research Network.
That means local doctors will be teaming up with researchers across the country to bring advanced clinical trials and cutting-edge treatments right here to our community.
Why this matters to Central Illinois families
Typically, patients looking for experimental treatments or advanced clinical trials have to travel to major medical centers in Chicago or Indianapolis. This partnership changes that. By teaming up with a network of over 100 academic and community research sites, OSF can now bring those exact same opportunities directly to Peoria.
Dr. Robert McWilliams, Deputy Director with the OSF Cancer Institute, says the move puts Peoria on the map.
“This helps us get recognition that we’re a player in the region and serving the people of Central Illinois,” Dr. McWilliams said. “It also means we’re collaborating with other researchers in the region to put OSF and those we serve on the map.”
How it works
The Hoosier Cancer Research Network is a highly respected nonprofit that has conducted more than 250 clinical trials and enrolled over 10,000 patients since 1984.
Now, OSF doctors can look at the network’s ongoing trials and decide which ones make the most sense to open in Peoria, or in other OSF markets.
Ultimately, it means faster access to the newest research, allowing local patients to receive high-quality, cutting-edge care without having to leave their families or travel far from home.
