CANTON, Ill. (25 News) – Authorities said Peoria’s bomb squad was called to Canton on Tuesday to “neutralize” an explosive device in a vehicle, and to search for bomb making material in a Farmington home.
The bomb squad was initially called to North Avenue B and West Chestnut Street where Canton Police said they made a traffic stop about 4:30 p.m.
Police said the driver, 40-year-old Benjamin F. Lingenfelter of Farmington, agreed to a search, and officers found an explosive device inside.
Police said the bomb squad neutralized the device, and “there is no threat to public safety or the community.”
Farmington Police said in a separate release that Lingenfelter agreed to a search of a home at 16 N. West Street, but the bomb squad found no bomb-making material.
The police departments provided no information about the explosive device or possible charges against Lingenfelter.
