BRIMFIELD, Ill. – Whitney’s Walk raises awareness about depression and suicide prevention in Central Illinois.
The event, now in its 23rd year, was founded by friends and family of Whitney Grotts after she took her own life in 2004.
“The family has been involved with us since day one. This has just really grown through the Greater Peoria community. Just seeing their involvement has been phenomenal,” Carle Health’s Matt Collins says.
Collins specializes in Children’s Mental Health.
“The biggest thing that I try to highlight when we talk about mental health, or we talk about substance use, is really normalizing the topic and the stigma,” Collins says.
He tells WMBD’s “Greg and Dan” that to date, Whitney’s Walk for Suicide Prevention and Awareness has raised nearly $2 million for local mental health resources and educational programs.
This year’s 5K is being held on Saturday, July 25 at Jubilee State Park in Brimfield.
