PEKIN, Ill. – The city of Pekin is buying new body cameras, but not for its police department.
On Monday night, the city council unanimously approved spending $40,241 to purchase eight new cameras. The deal also comes with seven licenses for the cameras, a docking station, cloud-based evidence storage, management software, training, and technical support.
The city will spend $13,521 in the first year of the five-year term, then $6,680 each year after.
The cameras will be used by Building Inspection and Code Enforcement personnel, with Chief Building Official Nic Maquet saying the primary purpose of the cameras will be for documentation.
“Currently the inspectors do go out on a lot of the code enforcement calls,” Maquet said. “We’re also on site for administrative warrants when they’re served, as well as you run into a lot of confrontational individuals sometimes.”
The cameras are being supplied by Axon Enterprise, the same company that provides cameras for the police department.
