PEORIA, Ill. – A teenager will spend what is likely the rest of his life in prison for his role in a fatal shooting last year in South Peoria.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 18-year-old Lamar Cagle was sentenced to 90 years on Friday for the murder of 20-year-old Teron Scott, Jr. Cagle was convicted of First Degree Murder and Aggravated Battery with a Firearm in October.
Cagle received 65 years for the murder conviction, and 25 for the aggravated battery conviction, with the sentences to be served one after the other.
Scott died in the early morning hours of June 20th, 2025 after he was shot in the back of the head. He was found in the back of a vehicle that had crashed into a tree at Martin Luther King Jr. Park. A second victim was treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wound injuries.
The shooting was captured on surveillance footage, showing the suspect vehicle driving recklessly to catch up to the victim vehicle. The suspect vehicle had crossed into oncoming traffic to pull alongside it before gunfire.
The suspect vehicle was later identified by police and discovered that it had a dashcam recording of the shooting. Cagle could be heard on the video discussing himself as one of the shooters.
At the sentencing hearing, prosecutors argued for 95 years for Cagle. They argued that Cagle was a member of the “Snakes,” a violent Peoria street gang. Prosecutors stated that despite the support of family, teachers, and coaches, Cagle chose to be involved in a gang and commit murder.
Judge Paul Bauer spoke to Cagle directly at the hearing. Bauer said he believed Cagle would understand one day the seriousness of his actions. But he added that a message needed to be sent to his peers and the community that Cagle’s actions were unacceptable.
Two others have been charged in the case with murder, with their cases pending.
