PEORIA, Ill. – The 4th of July holiday is a scary time for pets, with all the loud noises and festivities. And, more of them are lost on Independence Day than any other day of the year.
Peoria Animal Protection Services’ Becky Spencer says if your pet is microchipped, now is the time to make sure all their information is correct.
“You need to check the phone number, the home address, and contact information on the microchip. All of those need to be updated,” Spencer says.
You can check your pet’s microchip at the PCAPS Office, located at 2600 NE Perry Avenue in Peoria, or at one of the microchip scanning stations in Tower Park in Peoria Heights, or at City Hall in West Peoria.
Spencer says in addition to microchipping, having a collar and tag on your pet at all times is highly recommended.
“When an Animal Control Officer finds a stray pet with identification, they can immediately contact the owner and take it right home, bypassing the shelter altogether,” Spencer says.
If your pet hasn’t been microchipped yet, you can have it done free of charge at PCAPS during normal business hours (Monday-Saturday 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.) before July 3rd. You do not need an appointment, just bring along your pet and a photo I.D.
Thanks to a generous grant, PCAPS is able to offer the free service.
PCAPS will be closed July 3-4 for the holiday.
