PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) – A street leading to a Peoria marina near downtown has been named to honor the man who founded and gifted the property to the city.
On Tuesday afternoon, the City of Peoria and members of the public dedicated the street to Thomas Detweiller with an honorary street sign that reads “Thomas H. Detweiller Way.”
Earlier this month, the City of Peoria announced they were reclaiming a portion of Caroline Street near Detweiller Marina. The portion of the street was originally slated for sale to O’Brien Steel.
The Detweiller Playground Trust owns the land and is in the process of selling a portion of that land to O’Brien Steel, leaving some residents like Detweiller Playground Protectors member Tim Herold concerned about potentially losing access to the riverfront.
He said he believes that if it is sold to the steel company, they will construct a building that could cut off access to the riverfront.
