WASHINGTON, Ill. – The sale of certain Kratom products are now banned in the city of Washington.
The city council Monday night approved changes to city code to ban businesses from selling synthetic Kratom, selling natural Kratom to anyone under 21, adds labeling requirements, and bans establishments that sell natural Kratom to allow anyone under 21 inside their store.
Documents provided to council claim Kratom can have “psychoactive and intoxicating effects.” State law bans the sale of Kratom to those under 21.
The ordinance still allows possession of synthetic Kratom.
City Administrator Jeff Fiegenschuh says the changes will go into effect in 45 days, citing some conversations with concerned businesses that sell the product.
“Those establishments affected that have current inventory, not buying more inventory, but current inventory in stock, would allow them 45 days to sell the inventory that they already purchased,” Fiegenschuh said.
Washington joins East Peoria, Pekin, and Peoria Heights as other cities to ban the sale of Kratom.
