PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria organization devoted to helping inner-city youth hosted its annual back-to-school giveaway that included clear backpacks at the MECA Center in the West Bluff.
Kids were also able to pick up free uniforms, get sports physicals, and have some fun.
25 News reports the group behind the event, Product of the Project, hoped to set kids up with whatever they need to be successful in school.
“The economy is bad, and some people live in poverty. So, people just don’t have things, and our kids need these things to be productive,” said Antwan Banks, the founder and CEO of Product of the Project.
A new Peoria Public Schools policy will require middle and high school students to have clear backpacks starting in October.
Product of the Project gave away about 800 backpacks Saturday to help families follow the new policy.
