PEORIA, Ill. – The head of Peoria’s public television station says the top priority in the wake of federal funding cuts is to keep programming on the air.
WTVP President and CEO Jenn Gordon says the station is slated to lose about one million dollars in annual federal funding, or around 30% of its budget.
She tells the WMBD Radio Afternoon Show that Channel 47 has a strong endowment to help soften the blow, but will ask the community for help as well.
“There have been moments of crisis in the past, and there’s been big hurdles to overcome, and every time the community has stepped up, because they value what WTVP brings to the community,” Gordon said.
Gordon says for the time being, the station will operate with the assumption of no federal funding for the next several months.
The US Senate voted Thursday to rescind federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
