PEORIA, Ill. – A 16-year-old who’s being tried as an adult for shooting another teenager in Peoria’s West Bluff on Sunday admits to the shooting, but says it was self-defense.
During Janard Quin’s detention hearing on Wednesday, the prosecution said Quin and the 16-year-old victim were smoking marijuana at Quin’s home before walking to Peoria High School.
According to 25 News, while walking there, the victim said he turned around and saw Quin point a gun at him. He ran, and that’s when Quin allegedly pulled the trigger and shot him in the back.
Quin says the other teen threatened him prior to the shooting, which happened on N. Sheridan Avenue.
A judge has ordered that Quin be detained until his trial, and set his arraignment for April 24.
Quin is charged with aggravated battery with a firearm.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office automatically transferred the case to adult court because of Quin’s age and the charge against him.
