While supplies last, the Salvation Army is distributing food boxes from 8-11am at the Pekin location at 243 Derby St!
Each food box has items like pizza mix; instant mashed potatoes; canned vegetables; bread; peanut butter and jelly; cereal; instant oatmeal; canned fruit; tuna and tuna helper; soup; pasta and pasta sauce; and muffin mix.
The Salvation Army wants to help fill the gap by providing groceries to help you feed your families now that school is out and the kids aren’t getting breakfast and lunch at school.
People seeking food assistance has been steadily rising in our community this year. Many people seeking assistance have jobs and a place to live – but they are having a hard time making ends meet. That’s where The Salvation Army can step in to help.
Food insecurity is defined as lacking enough food to live a healthy, active life. Many people find themselves having to make the tough choice of paying rent or buying groceries; paying a medical bill or having to skip meals for their families. Studies are finding that while there are jobs available for people, the reality is that many don’t earn enough to cover the rising cost of living. The discontinuance of the emergency allotments to the food stamp benefits in March has also hurt many people who counted on that extra benefit to feed their families.
