PEKIN, Ill. – The City of Pekin is working to finalize plans for a dilapidated building that’s been abandoned for years.
At Monday’s council meeting, city leaders said they’re hoping to foreclose on the building that was once a Motel 6 and McCritter’s Bar & Grill on Court Street.
Citing uncut grass, security and safety concerns, council members called the building an eyesore in an otherwise thriving area.
Last week, Pekin City Attorney Jim Vasselli went before a judge, saying the building’s owners have offered to fix it up. But, the city wants it demolished.
Vasselli tells 25 News that there’s been talk of renovations to the building for years with no results.
“There’s just not a lot of faith in the part of the city that anybody who owns this property can take care of it. I said ‘Your honor, you have to take that into account, that there has to be trust if we’re going to do this. That’s why we’ve been put in a position where we want to take this into our own hands,’” Vasselli says.
The judge said he’ll give the owners 30 days to finalize a plan to refurbish the building.
