CHATHAM, Ill. – Illinois State Police are helping investigate a fatal crash in Chatham Monday afternoon.
The crash happened around 3:20 p.m. Officers responded to the YNOT After School Camp, on Breckenridge Road, where a vehicle drove into the east side of the building.
The vehicle hit multiple people outside, then struck several more people inside, before exiting through the west wall.
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon says two 7-year-olds, an 8-year-old, and an 18-year-old were killed. All four girls suffered multiple blunt force injuries and died at the scene.
Six other children were taken to area hospitals, and one is in critical condition.
The driver, 44-year-old Marianne Akers of Chatham, was not injured, and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
ISP says Akers is not in custody at this time, as the cause of the crash is still being investigated.
Toxicology reports are pending.
Police say it does not appear the crash was a targeted attack.
