PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. – Not everyone wants flowers for Valentine’s Day, but most everyone loves chocolate.
Trefzger’s Bakery in Peoria Heights has been preparing for Valentine’s Day for over a week, making thousands of a favorite chocolate treat.
“We are making roughly 400 chocolate-covered Strawberries each day,” says Trefzger’s General Manager Julia Kepler.
Kepler says they’ve been swamped since the weekend, first making all kinds of breads for Super Bowl Sunday, then King Cakes for Mardi Gras and now all kinds of sweet treats for Valentine’s Day.
“We have some pre-orders, and then most of our Valentine’s traffic is walk-in,” Kepler says.
If you haven’t picked up anything for your valentine or valentines, Trefzger’s will be open all day Wednesday.
“Eclairs and cream puffs with Cherry Bavarian filling. And, then we do Red Velvet cakes and cupcakes, we do a lot of heart-shaped cakes and cookies too,” Kepler says.
With it being Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, there’s been talk this week about chocolate costing more this year.
“Overall, we’ve seen product costs increase throughout the year. However, we’ve really tried to keep the cost of our Valentine’s products the same as we did last year,” Kepler says.
Trefzger’s Bakery has been making baked goods in Peoria Heights since 1861. You can find their store at 4416 N. Prospect Road.
