EAST PEORIA, Ill. – He’s glad a crisis has been averted, but one local Illinois Congressman says he couldn’t cast a vote to end it.
Congressman Darin LaHood said Friday he felt the debt ceiling bill approved by Congress, and which the President will sign Saturday, just isn’t good enough.
“About a month ago, I did support raising the debt ceiling. We had substantial financial reforms in there,” said LaHood (R-Dunlap), referring to the original GOP plan to raise the debt ceiling and make sweeping cuts.
“My biggest concern is the debt this country is in,” said LaHood. “We’re $32 trillion in debt. We have spent way too much money. We have to get that under control. I didn’t think this bill went far enough in terms of…getting our fiscal house in order.”
LaHood tells 25 News he’s “proud” of the vote he cast, but says the compromise was a good example of how divided government is supposed to work.
