UPDATED 4:05 P.M.
CHICAGO, Ill. — The Chicago Bears have fired coach Matt Nagy, ending his tenure after the team posted a 6-11 record this season.
General manager Ryan Pace, whose future has also been in question, is also out.
“2018 was a great ride — 12 wins, and a division title. Ryan was Executive of the Year, and Matt was Coach of the Year. We thought we were on our way,” said George McCaskey, Bears Chairman. “Unfortunately, it could not be sustained.”
Nagy was named NFL Coach of the Year after his first season in 2018, when he led the Bears to a 12-4 record and reached the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
Buzz about his possible firing has been brewing since the end of November, when a report emerged that Nagy would be fired after the Bears’ Thanksgiving Day game with the Detroit Lions.
“The hiring of Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy — I don’t regret that. They both brought a lot to the Bears,” said Ted Phillips, Bears President. “Ultimately, on the field, the results on the field weren’t where we wanted it to [sic].”
Phillips and McCaskey call Pace and Nagy classy men who brought a lot to the team, despite two seasons of losing records after two seasons of making the playoffs but losing.
McCaskey says from now on, whoever the General Manager and head coach are will report directly to him, while Phillips works on the team’s proposed new stadium in the Chicago suburbs.
