Um, Where Are The Doobie Brothers?

So I was coming into the studio this morning and ran into John Riley.  I asked him if he had seen the nominee list for the 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. He hadn’t, so I rattled off a few of the main nominees including Bon Jovi, The Cars, Dire Straits and The Moody Blues.

All worthy in my opinion, but his first reaction was: “Where are the Doobie Brothers!”

Solid point.  The Doobie Brothers essentially had 2 eras. The Tom Johnston era in the early 70’s and the Michael McDonald era.

Whichever era you are a particular fan of, this band’s music has stood the test of time. Amazing harmonies, tremendous musicianship, (including former Steely Dan guitarist Skunk Baxter…I mean c’mon) 40 million albums sold, and their songs are a vital part of radio station playlists across the country.

The Eagles were inducted almost 20 years ago.  Maybe the Rock Hall judges think “Black Water” and “Rockin’ Down The Highway” were songs from Hotel California.

Here’s the list of 2018 nominees:

  • Bon Jovi
  • Kate Bush
  • The Cars
  • Depeche Mode
  • Dire Straits
  • Eurythmics
  • J. Geils Band
  • Judas Priest
  • LL Cool J
  • MC5
  • The Meters
  • Moody Blues
  • Radiohead
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Rufus featuring Chaka Khan
  • Nina Simone
  • Sister Rosetta Tharpe
  • Link Wray
  • The Zombies
