“Give me the meatballs?”

Lyrics are often misheard or misunderstood. That was definitely the case for Dobie Gray back in 1973 with his hit “Drift Away”.

The line “Give me the beat boys and free my soul” was mistaken for “Give me the Beach Boys…” by most people. Some heard “Give me the meatballs…” and “Give me the wheat boys…” was proposed for a cereal commercial.

The Rolling stones even recorded a version of “Drift Away” during the  sessions for “It’s Only Rock & Roll” but never released it. Check out their version here
